Reformed Tunes Tuesday: Thrice – “At The Last”

This jam comes from Thrice’s newest album “Beggars”. It’s about a man who is nearing/at the end of his life, and is looking back on all that he has done. He sees that he’s never really done anything too bad (murder/steal), and that he seems to have always looked out for his own best interests. He’s a pretty good guy. But then realizes that when he’s gone, none of it really mattered, that it was all in vain.

Anathallo, a greek word meaning “to renew, refresh, or bloom again”. This song is about a man who has reached the end of his rope, deep in his sin, and realizes his need for God.

I think this may be my first post actually addressing regeneration. And it’s done by one of my favorite bands, the high-energy, vocally-overwhelming, lyrically-enlivened…Future of Forestry. This song is talking about an unbeliever, as the Holy Spirit works and gives them life and a new heart.

This song is off of one of my favorite albums of all time, Vheissu (2005). This song stood out to me more than any song on the record with it amazing intrumentals, incredible vocals, and very rich and stunningly visual lyrics. The song is based off the story of Peter and takes place through his eyes, going through the end of his time with Jesus. For example: bitter herbs(passover), bread and wine(last supper), etc. What makes it such a great story is how the song picks up at the end and feels like such a rush, and you can almost literally feel what Peter was feeling, what things were racing through his mind, and the pain and anguish in his heart.

Jon Foreman is a favorite of mine, with great music and great lyrics. This song comes off of his “Fall EP” (2007), and discusses the sinfulness and depravity of man and the justice and wrath of God.

Derek Webb is very profound to me. He has great music and sings about topics that most Christians don’t want to talk about, and yet somehow is on a mainstream Christian label (even if he did get temporarily kicked off the label for his songs being too controversial). He has an interesting balance of being very deep and poetic in his lyrics, while also being very blunt and to the point. This song is about the suffering for those who are in Christ and the joy that we should have for that suffering in bringing him glory.

Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!

David Crowder band sets such a high bar in mainstream Christian music for great lyrics, and just as importantly, great music.

A great song about our brief life here on Earth and living for our true home in eternity with Jesus, from Thrice’s new album “Beggars”
